Travel Hacks: How to travel cheap

I’m back with another travel related post. This time I want to go through some tips and tricks which can help you spend less money on traveling. I am a true believer of the fact that you don’t need to be rich in order to enjoy a pleasant vacation.

Paris, France

Low cost flights
My first tip is to only buy low cost flying tickets and to not add extra luggage. Pack light and book in advance. Choose the vacation dates based on the lowest price you can find on your wanted flight. There are plenty of low cost flight companies such as WizzAir, Ryan Air, Blue Air, Eurowings, Easy Jet etc.

Watch out for deals
Whenever I see 20% sales on WizzAir flights I just can not help but browse through. If you are member of their discount club you can get even lower flight prices.

Low cost destinations
If you don’t have a lot of money to spend on your next trip, choose your destination wisely. Do your research on the cost of restaurants, accomodation, groceries and public transportation in that area. The prices can differ significantly, such as the ones in Italy and Spain versus the ones in Denmark or Iceland.

Weekend trip
You don’t need to plan a 7 day vacation especially if you don’t have that much money to spend. I find that a 3 day trip is long enough to visit the city and its surroundings and to also get a bit of rest. My favorite destinations for small weekend trips are cities such as Prague (Prague vlog here) , Paris or Barcelona (where you can also enjoy the beach).

Plan ahead
To make the most of your trip, especially in the case of a shorter one, it’s good to plan ahead, to make an itinerary. This way you know how many transport ticktes you’ll need, where to begin with the sightseeing, how much money you’ll need for museum visits etc. You can also check Yelp for reasonably priced restaurants or pubs. I also like to buy tickets for museums online. You can often get a better deal and that way you won’t have to wait in line. Time means money.

Take friends along
We usually don’t travel in big groups, but when we do, it’s always fun! If you travel with friends, consider renting a car or an Airbnb apartment. It’s ofen cheaper (depending on your destination) and more convenient. In Airbnbs you also have the option to cook for yourselves at least for breakfast or dinner.
